The past few weeks I’ve heard countless phrases such as “I can’t wait until the semester is over.” “I wish I could just fast forward and be done with school.” Or if I am talking to someone who recently returned from a mission trip “I just wish I could be back there.” “It’s so hard to be back here.”

I am guilty of saying these same things many times. However, I’ve also realized the importance of living in the now. There’s a quote I’ve heard many time and I believe there is so much truth to it, “Don’t leave before you go and don’t stay after you leave.” One last quote that I love as well “Your rear view mirror is smaller than your windshield for a reason.” Don’t focus on your past so much because if you do you will wreck, but at the same time you can’t look to far into the future because things change so much. For example, I at one point thought that after I graduate I would go straight into working on my Master’s degree. However, God had completely different plans for me.

As I am getting ready to leave in a few months my heart has not been in the present. I’ve switched my entire focus to the coming year. This isn’t necessarily all bad, but I’ve realized I have been missing the things that God is doing right here! If my focus is on the future how can I effectively serve God where I am at right now? It is definitely hard having my heart and mind on school when I know what I’m doing afterwards. However, God has me where I am at for a reason and I can be content in knowing that. There is work that still needs to be done in the town I’m living in as well as on my college campus and I know that if I am willing God can use me here too!

Whether you are getting ready to graduate college or are in the midst of a job you may not like or maybe even still in high school remember God has you where He has you so that you be a light for Him!
