A room that is often used to gather in. You eat, play and talk in and around the room. You laugh, cry, and stuff your face in this room.
The Kitchen is a place where people can come together and be family.
A kitchen in ministry is often used for serving purposes. You sign up to do a soup kitchen or use the room to make meals and deliver them. Maybe you use your kitchen in ministry to have loved ones over and serve them meals, make them coffee and pass out warm chocolate chip cookies. These are all amazing ministry outreaches using a simple space.
However, when was the last time that you used the space to worship and sing praise to Jesus? Have you ever gathered in the kitchen, plopped down on the floor with a handful of friends, guitar in hand and just started singing to Jesus?
Our team, Kindred, means family. We often find ourselves gathering in the kitchen, doing most of the common activities such as eating and laughing and making our coffee. But then there are these moments where we somehow all end up sitting our tooshies on the wooden floors, having some of the deepest and richest conversations. Held within those minutes and hours spent on the floor we dive deeper and look more into what it looks like to commune together.
One night, we gathered for team time; a time used for us to bond, reflect, feedback, and pray and there we were, on the kitchen floor. We had a guitar in hand and 7 young Jesus followers looking to lift glory up to Jesus.
It was one of the sweetest nights of worship that we had as a family. My heart felt the tenderness of Jesus’ heart. I would occasionally crack my eyes open to look around at my team mates and it felt like I was looking at them through Jesus’ eyes; so pleased and proud of His children. I had to chuckle to myself because it felt like we bonded to a new level when we took time to just sit as His children together and worshiped our Father’s name at His feet.
It got me thinking.
What if every family did this on a regular basis? What is friends did this regularly?
What would it do for relationships if we just gathered in our most comfortable and basic locations, with minimal instruments, and simply praised Jesus.
No agenda. No preparation. No limitations.
Creating a free space for one another to come, be still and worship together.
There on the kitchen floor we grew closer, dove deeper and lifted His name on high. Breaking out of the box that closes worship and community into a contained area.
Go take a cozy seat on your kitchen floor and try it for yourself.
“Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name. Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all His benefits who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
Psalm 103:1-5 NIV
