I have always been intrigued by Jewish history and I was reading on the internet the history behind what the Jewish culture liked to say “Following the dust of my Rabbi.” In the 1st century, there were many prominent Rabbi’s and each Rabbi would have
disciples. It was a great honor to be invited by a Rabbi to become his disciple, but becoming his disciple did not simply mean to become a student of the Rabbi’s teachings. It meant actually following the Rabbi from place to place, becoming like him, emulating his actions and attitudes, and developing his character. It was common to say to someone who had become a disciple “May you always be covered in the dust of your Rabbi.”
I am sharing this history with you because i believe there is a reason the father told us “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11 29-30.
So many times in church, sunday school and summer camps we are told that we need to have faith in God and that we are to have faith in Jesus. Don’t get me wrong I strongly believe we need to have faith in him. But maybe Jesus is also telling us that he has faith in us in me. Maybe he actually believes that I could be one of his disciples. But why? Why would he call me of all these people out into the nations? He called me to these places because he believes in me. He believes I can step out of the boat and follow him. But am I worthy enough?, Am I good enough?, Will I say the right things?, Will I ask the right questions?, Do the right things?. That’s the Point. I won’t because I am just as messed up as everyone else. We are the people God calls to the nations and to change the world because we understand the broken hearted and the beat down.
“We are not called to understand the ways of people or the world but we are called to understand God. He puts people in our path to help us understand him better.”
We are worthy to be called by our Rabbi and have our faces covered with the dust from his feet
