I’m sure you have heard the phrase “Work smarter, not harder”
before, well I am here to tell you that is not always true. Sometimes when it just comes down to it, you
just need to work harder and not smarter for you can begin to over analyze
things and before you know it, you have spent over half your time trying to
figure out the best way to go about your business. Instead you just need to do it, and all the
rest of it to come as you go about doing it. This is the Nicaraguan way. One
of the projects we are working on here is constructing a soccer field for the
locals to use, in hopes of starting a league, because what they use here is
just the parking lot/our driveway, which isn’t the best by any means. So the area we had was all grown over in
weeds and we had to cut it down just to begin with. I was taken back by the size of the field and
without a lawn mower and only machetes, I was not looking forward to the days
to come. Fortunately for me and my team,
a group of Nicaraguan youth spent all day using their machetes clearing the
field for us, or at least cutting the grass.
A few
days later after the grass was dead, it needed cleaned up. I was looking about for rakes and other tools
to use to pick up the dead grass, to my surprise there was no need to look
about anymore for when I looked up, I saw the same group of youth using sticks
they found on the ground to rake the ground and to push and pull the dead grass
into huge piles only to set them on fire later on in the day because that is
the easiest thing to do with a huge pile of dead grass. Then earlier this week, it was just me and my
team overlooking this field that use to be a bean field and saw how bumpy it
was from it being used as a bean field and felt that it all needed to be tilled
up in order for the lumps to go away. So
once again I am at a cross roads of trying to figure out the easiest way of
going about tilling up a whole soccer field and it finally came to me, just do
it. So with as much guster as I could
mount up, I told the women what we needed to do and off to work we went. Once again, God provides and throughout this
week of working and tilling the ground, He has sent some of the youth over to
help us move the dirt around so that we can get this field done by the time we
leave.
