I’m not interested in telling people about Jesus anymore. I’m interested in them experiencing Him. I’m interested in seeing lives changed, hearts healed, and souls revived. When I see God doing great things around me, it invokes the passion within me to want to partner with Him. “Where are You going, God? Take me with You.” “What are You doing today? Can I do it too?”
I think that’s what Peter may have thought as well when he saw Christ walking on the water. I can imagine him thinking, “That’s so cool! I wanna do that! Maybe if I ask Him, He’ll show me how!” And what’s so great is that Jesus didn’t give Peter a book entitled, “10 Steps to Walking on Water.” Christ didn’t say, “I love your zeal, Peter. Why don’t I enroll you in my 5 week program and you’ll be water walkin’ in no time.” Instead, He said, “Come” (Matthew 14:29).
So I’m sitting with my Bible open, worship music on, asking God to reveal more of Himself to me. I have my pen ready to write down anything He wants to say, and then I hear it. “Come.” Oh crap. Really? I don’t know about this. This water walkin’ business sounds slightly treacherous actually. And then I realize that I want to walk on water…. without getting out of the boat.
Peter didn’t end up running laps on the sea of Galilee. The art of listening to God and acting in obedience immediately without wavering is a process. And more often than not, there are some serious misgivings. But, Peter was the only one who could say that He walked on the water with Jesus. He went farther and experienced more than all of the other disciples.
I’ve come to the conclusion that following Christ is not for the faint of heart. He goes places no one’s ever been before. He takes the word “impossible” as a personal challenge. If you go with Him, you’re guaranteed to get a little roughed up. But, at the end of the day, you’ll be able to say that you got to go a little farther… got to know Him a little more than the rest. Who knows, you might even get to do some water walkin’.
