We Made It!
Amsterdam to watch the sunrise during our layover, a night at a hostel in
Nairobi, and a 32 hour bus ride on insanely bumpy African dirt roads we have
made it to Lira, Uganda.
I’m pretty sure
everything that could have gone wrong during our bus ride to Uganda did. Our bus was four hours late to arrive at the
bus station so we entertained ourselves and even had our feedback session for
the day while all piled up on the curb in downtown Nairobi. We got to the border with Uganda about 10
hours later at 7am only to be told that our bus didn’t have permission to enter
South Sudan (the end of the line for our bus) so we had to wait at the border
until a new one arrived then we could unload our old bus and re-load the new
one. About 7 Hours later the new bus
finally arrived, and headed to Uganda to pass customs, while our old bus broke
down on the way up the hill into Uganda, blocking both sides of traffic. We waited for about another hour until they
got the bus running again, then we loaded up the new bus and headed to northern
Uganda on more bumpy roads for another 11 hours until we reached Lira.
Our bus ride could have very easily made everyone miserable but
my team took it like champs. They didn’t
complain or get angry, they just laughed it off as Sara (my co-leader) and I
would tell them “welcome to Africa.”
They have rocked their first few days in Africa and it’s awesome to
see!!
More coming soon. So
far it’s been incredible!
