Sometimes you realize God’s call in a series of God moments, where He uses people and experiences and His Word to slowly teach and lead you. It began with a question: What does it truly mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? When Jesus said deny yourself and follow me, to live your life you have to lose it, were those just inspirational words or are they meant to be lived and followed. And if, like I believe, they are meant to be obeyed, what would that look like in my life? I began asking God this question a few years ago and so begins a journey.

Since high school, I have been interested in missions and loved working with kids. What has always tugged at my heart is the need of children in our country and other countries around the world. I found out about the World Race two years ago by accident, although nothing is really accidental is it? Something about this reminded me of my prayer to God about what it means to be a follower of Jesus, but at the time it didn’t seem like this could be possible. Around the same time, I returned from a short mission trip to Sierra Leone, Africa. As I began to pray about that experience, God told me to wait. Wait for what I didn’t know, but God is faithful.

This summer, God answered. Have you ever had one of those times when the need to obey is so strong it feels like a weight on your heart and mind? You know that until you step out in faith and obedience that the weight will remain until it is too late. For me the thought of that weight leaving was even scarier than thought of doing something I felt completely inadequate for. The Lord sent me a word in the form of a devotional book by Frances J. Roberts that is written from His perspective. It said:
Be obedient: You will bring joy to My heart. Neither the applause nor the scorn of others should be of any consequence to you. My approval is reward enough and without this, any other satisfaction is not worthy of your pursuit. Walk on with Me. I will be very near to give you support and encouragement, so you have nothing to warrant your fears. They will vanish as you obey.
God is calling us all to be faithful and obedient to Him in whatever He asks us to do. God is asking me to trust Him. Not trust Him for what I want to happen or trust Him that something will not happen. But to trust that whatever does happen, God has it in His capable hands.
