But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.

2 Corinthians 4:7-10 ESV

We encountered several different ministries in Cambodia, and often, we met on common ground: Jars of Clay – a safe haven with western and Cambodian food, baked goods and amazing coffee.

The shop was started by an English woman who trained local women to bake, cook, waitress, and manage the store. She eventually handed the business over to the locals. Today, Jars of Clay is run entirely by young Cambodian women. They also donate a tenth of the profits to help “people in need,” such as widows, orphans, and the sick in the local community. Katherine is one such benefactor of their business endeavors.

A safe place where local women can work honestly and earn a living AND a modern-day ‘watering well’ for all to gather and be blessed – Jars of Clay might not be the traditional mission plan but it might be the future trend to share Christ’s love, provide tangible hope and empower locals.
