For 3 days this week my team and I spent our time in a smaller village outside of El Nido named Denat, where we helped with the building of a church. The first day we showed up and saw a field with several logs and some people standing around. So our first task was to remove the bark from the logs so that they would be shaven and ready to use for building. So in order to do this we took smaller sticks and beat on the logs all day long until the bark would come flying off and leave the tree clean and ready to use for building. While I set to work on the logs some people grabbed machetes and began to clear out the field so we could build a foundation for where the church was to be. Then the next two days we spent our time moving dirt to fill up the area of the floor and placing the beams of the church into the ground, it was really exciting to see how it all was coming together, but I’m really sad that we will not be able to see the end result.

My favorite part of these days would have to be the three hour lunch breaks that we had where we were invited into the Pastor’s home to eat lunch and then take a two hour nap on the bamboo floor of his porch while chickens fought underneath and ants crawled all over us. These moments gave us a real opportunity to bond with eachother and the pastor and his family. It was such a true blessing to meet this man and be able to help him begin the first church in his village.
