India

In the morning I wake up and sometimes still forget where I am. I feel the heat of the sun on my face and hear the chickens outside of our window. I roll off of my air mattress, walk out the door, and then I remember, I am in India. This place is incredible and challenging at the same time. In a culture and environment so dramatically different than my own, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. There are times where the language barrier and social differences are extremely frustrating. However, there are also times where I am taught lessons, and shown things I could never have imagined I would see or learn in my life.

Last night we led a worship service at a colony made up primarily of people in the lowest class of Indian society. It was incredible to see the faith that they all had, and a blessing to every one of us when we were able to pray with them and speak hope into their lives. After the worship service I was shown the meaning of the word hospitality. We were invited to have dinner with one of the families living in the colony. The house was barely large enough to fit the three generations that lived there, so we all sat on the front porch for dinner. Knowing that this family struggled to sustain themselves, it was an emotional experience when I was able to give thanks for the meal that they had served us.  It’s times like this where I see the absolute truth in Jesus’ words when he says, “Blessed are the poor.”

Acts of kindness like the ones shown to us by this family are contagious. I know when I witness something as selfless as what they did, I am inspired to give of myself to others. I say all this to tell you that love is not simply a sentimental feeling; it pushes us to give of ourselves for the benefit of others, by doing so we create a cycle of hope, generosity, and compassion. I pray that we all choose to do small acts of kindness, so that the great love God has shown us can change the world.
