It is probably an overstated saying, but saying goodbye is never easy. Knowing that you will not see someone you care about for a long period of time is even scary. Tonight as world racers and our parents met together in Washington DC we all knew that it was coming. At some point we would say our goodbyes, and watch as we left one another. However, tonight I began to see that goodbyes can signify not just the ending of a period of time, but the beginning of something new. A new season in our lives, where what was is now different, and the idea of what is to come brings both fear and hope.
Tonight saying goodbye was not easy, but I know that in order for this season to begin it had to happen. Letting go of what we’re used to or what comforts us is difficult, but for movement, for change, for growth, we are often called to say goodbye. My family means everything to me, but as I said goodbye to them, not just tonight, but over the past week, I began a process of saying hello to a new kind of family. This family is not biological, but spiritual, and over the next eleven months will experience things, and grow in ways that only God knows.
I say all these things as a reminder not only to myself but to you as well, that life will have its goodbyes, but those goodbyes reassure us that we are continuing to move, to grow, and to experience life. So let us place our hope in a God that we know is eternal, and let us be encouraged in knowing that goodbyes are not always the end, just the beginning of something new.
