This past week has really opened my eyes to a newunderstanding
of family and community in Christ. It also destroyed the box that I had put
God into, and showed me that He is so much bigger than I believe we
will ever understand! This past week was filled with struggle, frustration,
questioning, hope, laughter, dancing, and above all love.
As you begin the process of going on The World Race, you often
hear about how your fellow racers will become your family. I however
struggle with opening up to people, so I was somewhat dismissive of
the idea of fifty, essentially strangers, becoming my family. However, by
the end of training camp, after an intense week of community and
identity growth, I now see how a group of people passionately seeking
after God, and building one another up in love, will become a family.
This sense of connection, however, did not stop with just those of
us who were present at the camp. As we all talked about the coming
year and the places we will go and the people we will meet, the sense
of an international family began to spring up in my heart. I believe we are
going out into the Nations to not only work with and serve those we meet
along the way, but also strengthen the connection we all have as a
family through God. I now believe that the great big God we follow is
going to open my mind to the great big family we all have.
This experience was amazing, and I would gladly go through all
the stress of fundraising and preparation that led to it again and again in
order to be shown what I have seen over the past week. We are all
running the race, it brings me hope to see that I am not alone in it, and I
hope it brings you hope too. This year is not about expectations,
because when we place expectations on God we tend to frame
Him smaller that what He really is, instead I believe it is about growth,
growing in family, growing in faith, growing in hope, and growing in love.
