Tonight I was blessed by an amazing sermon at Red Rocks Young Adults, down in Denver. So, I am going to share my thoughts and some notes on it =)
The message was titled: Don’t Do Nothing – Do Something. It is based on the scripture James 1:22 “Do not just listen to God’s word. YOU MUST DO what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourself.” It is part of a study called Heights, we are in week three. The study is about Experiencing the Potential that is Available to YOU through Christ.
This is the second time I have been to this young adults group, and I am blown away. Last week I was overwhelmed by the 500 young adults loudly worshiping our God. I had never been to a young adults group that was so large, and I surprisingly liked it. The worship was more like a concert than a normal church worship service – I couldn’t even hear myself sing let alone the hundreds of people around me. But, it was good. I could focus on the words, and the act of worshiping my Lord.
It wasn’t an intimate experience with the other students, but it was an intimate experience with God. That’s what we are there for anyway isn’t it?
We focused on the story in Matthew, 25:14-28. The story is about a master who leaves town and entrusts his servants with all of his money while he is gone. Two of the servants doubled the masters money, but one was fearful and buried it so that he would not loose it.
God does not want us to bury our lives, our opportunities. Take risks! TRY. “It is His job to make things happen, it is our job to try.
Shouldn’t we error on the side of action? Instead of letting fear paralyze us?
The most spoken commandment in the bible is Thou Shalt Not Fear.
AND with a Father that is SO powerful, isn’t it a bit funny for His children to be afraid?
One of the things I suspect that we are most afraid of is failure, but is God really going to be mad if we try and then fail? Or will he be disappointed that you lived your life without reaching your potential, or without trying, or without going after the opportunities that He has set in front of you?
DO SOMETHING
“But God doesn’t call us to be comfortable. He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if He doesn’t come through.” -Francis Chan
As Christians we are not called to just go to church. To take a dose of God once a week and then live the rest of the week for ourselves. We are called to do GREAT things. We are called to Honor the Lord Our God. As Christians we need to take what we learn on Sundays and APPLY it. We need to exercise what we learn and know.
If we get out of our comfort zones, we apply scripture, we may make mistakes. We may mess up. BUT you are guaranteed to make a mistake if you do absolutely nothing.
God has a beautiful, brilliant, and marvelous plan for every single one of you. Just ask Him!
Psalm 139:13-16 “For you created my inmost being;you knit me together in my mother’s womb.I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;your works are wonderful,I know that full well.My frame was not hidden from youwhen I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.Your eyes saw my unformed body;all the days ordained for me were written in your bookbefore one of them came to be.”
Re-read that bolded section of the verse. Does that not sound like God has a PLAN for your life?
You were chosen by God, you are not an accident.
Ephesians 1:3-14 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 hepredestined us for adoption to sonshipthrough Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.
11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”
DO SOMETHING
I pray that every single one of you reading this post feels that tug from God on your heart. You are important. You are wanted. You are special. YOU can do something. WE can change the world.
You may laugh at me saying that, “change the world”, really? YES. The God of this Universe created me to make a difference, not to sit back and be comfortable. This life is more than just working a “good” job, so that you can live a “good” life.
This life is about being obedient to your creator. Being obedient to your Father. Being obedient to Jesus Christ, and TOGETHER with his SPIRIT living inside of EVERY believer – making a difference in this world. Living up to your potential. Taking risks. Living for God, and dying to yourself.
I pray that God reveals to you the PLAN He has for each and every one of you – and I pray that you have the Faith, and the Courage to listen.
For me at this point in my life, The World Race is His plan for me… So I am listening, and I will go.
