The medical saga continues in Uganda. The following chronicles my 4 day hospital adventure in Mukono. I doubt you’ll leave feeling confident in my physical well being but I ensure I’m fine.

We went to the Sir Albert General Clinic and Nursing Home. It is apparently the best in the area. According to staff malaria is no big deal but mine was very bad and I would have to come back for four more days of subsequent treatment.  Which is where our story begins.

Day1: “you have malaria”

(My Hospital Bed)

Malaria requires administration of IV fluids. After the lab tech marveled at the fact you can see mzungus veins through the akin he got to work. We tried on my left hand several times and failed. Hd though he was successful but ended up blowing out the vein. I passed put from the pain. My left hand swollen beyond recognition he proceeded to try the IV in my right hand

.(The wonderful IV pole. Upgrade!)

IV in place the flushed it put then prepared the anti malarial medication. The nurse told me it might burn slightly. Let me tell you it felt as though a shard of ignited magnesium had just been injected into my veins. They took me to a back room with a nail on the wall and an old mattress on a hospital gurney. I sat there alone until nightfall. The electricity failed and I sat in the pitch black hooked to an IV, still throwing up and scared out of my mind.

Luckily a nice man came and checked on me and offered me a flashlight. I left a bit bruised, a bit more nauseous then when I arrived and a bit more convinced the USA is the only place I’d like to get sick ever again.

Then it hit me, “that was only day 1!”
