So…what’s your ministry this month? Well…it looks a bit like riding in a van through lots of insane traffic, drinking chai tea, and praying a lot. If I left you with that description it would sound kinda boring…but it’s been anything but dull…I promise! Our schedule and where we’re going has been quite a mystery…but God moving, shaking, and rattling our little views of who He is and how He communicates has been blown away.
We head to a house for typical family of 5 or 6 and/or extended families and the space is smaller than most closets I’ve had stuffed with things I don’t really need. Sometimes we sit on a cot or on a mat on the floor. It’s hard to imagine families spending time in these rooms let alone cooking and sleeping in the same space. Often our contact will start out with a worship song in Hindi. Prayer requests are mentioned such as praying for children’s education, a good husband for a daughter waiting on an arranged marriage, and healing from various accidents or diseases like Typhoid or Dengue. Certain people feel drawn to pray for different family members and then we sit and wait…and God blows us away with a specific word from Him, a vision, a verse or verses of scripture. Then comes the chai! Chai, maybe a cookie, or a cup of orange soda…we enjoy a few minutes of fellowship and we’re on to the next house. We may never see these families again or know the way in which God answers our meager prayers…but He does and we are thankful.
