Her eyes were deep brown. She had colored braids in her hair which created the perfect combination of blue and black. The contrast of her dark brown skin and bright white teeth made her smile radiate. Her belly was swollen from the lack of nutrition made available to her.

Our eyes locked onto each other. I slowly walked over to her, not knowing how she would react to me.   Her hand reached mine, and for the next thirty minutes we were inseparable. For that moment, it was just the two of us.

Her eyes were bright blue. She had light brown hair that moved with the wind. Her lightly-tanned skin seemed to glow in the sun.

All of the other children were running up to her, so I didn’t think she would notice me. She saw me look at her. She started walking towards me. She looked down at me and smiled. I reached for her hand and she held it. She told me I was beautiful and that she loved me. That was the first time I had never heard that before.

Love: The simplest command found in the Bible, yet sometimes completely overlooked and forgotten.

Why do we so often get caught up in taking action, when we fail to follow the most important action of all?

The more of the world I see, the more overwhelmed I get with the need and the brokenness that consumes it. People are hurting. People are sick. People are starving. People are depressed. People are dying. And I can’t do a thing about it.

Towards the middle of my Race, I started to feel hopeless and apathetic. How could I even begin to change the world? I could help one person, but what about the other millions of people reaching their hands out for anything I can offer?

I presented this feeling to one of my squad leaders, and I was shocked at the simplicity of the answer I got. She said my only obligation to the world was to love the person God has put in front of me. Sometimes, like the little girl I met, all people need to hear is that someone loves them to have their world turned upside down.

People are simple, which is why I believe our complex God gave us such simple instructions.

Love, and start with the person in front of you.
