As the ground began to shake, with what was only a minor earthquake, I was reminded of how fragile and brief life really is. You don’t expect or plan for it to happen but it just happens and you are left powerless and at it’s mercy.
It has only been a few months since two major earthquakes hit Nepal leaving disaster and hopelessness. Catching the majority by surprise, these earthquakes hit violently killing tens of thousands and leaving many injured and homeless.
I have seen with my own eyes the effect it had on this country and on these people. What used to be homes and buildings are now heaps of rubble. People’s lives and homes have been taken away from them.
What do you do when your house collapses and you are left homeless? What do you do when you lose a loved one? This is reality for many living here. Many turn to their god’s in hope for restoration but these idols do not hear or see. Their hope in these idols are in vain, but their hopelessness is not in vain, for God is using what the earthquake did for evil to bring many to true Life in Him. Hopelessness is the doorway to hope and because of this tragedy many people are now searching for hope; the kind that is immovable because it is founded on the true Rock.
“God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.”
Psalm 46:1-3
““Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.”
Psalm 46:10-11
We do not need to fear when the earth quakes, or when things seem to be completely out of control because He know the one the is in control and He is our refuge, our fortress and our unshakeable rock on which our lives our built.
Sometimes a situation looks so hopeless that a natural analysis would be that nothing good can spring up from it but that’s where we are wrong. God often uses hopeless situations to give true hope to the nations. He doesn’t want our hope to be in things that waver but He desires to give us a Hope that is unshakable and indestructible. That hope is only found in Jesus. If you do not know this hope God desires for you to know and experience Him. Ask Him today, He will answer you. If you do know this Hope then God wants to grow us in this Hope. Instead of seeing hopelessness in things, see Hope in them.
Because of everything that has happened, God has led us to many people who have been searching and we were able to tell them about the God we serve and the abundant life we have in Him. There are countless stories of divine appointments where God’s direction and pursuit is obvious. Thank you for being a part of those moments through prayer and giving.
As I was sitting there and the ground began to shake I was reminded that I have no control over my life but I know the one who does. Every breath I take is given to me for His purpose and glory. God may choose to stop giving me breath at any second. He is the author of life; only He is able to decide when to give it and when to take it away. Every day is a grace of God and it is our responsibility to use that gift wisely and to live it for Him.
