As the jet lag haze clears, our first ministry assignment is found in a small town just a few miles from the Thai border. Welcomed by a generous pastor, our team was automatically grafted into his family. They stop at nothing to make sure we are as comfortable as possible while still giving us opportunity to experience the Malay culture… Squatty potty included. During the day, two of my teammates and I help at a preschool full of incredibly adorable, energetic children, and at night we host English classes for the neighborhood children.
Mastering eating with my right hand, watching lizards climb on our bedroom walls, removing my shoes before going into every home, and falling asleep to the mysterious sounds of the jungle, I can’t help but think, “Is this real life?” The answer is yes, and I’m learning to embrace this new normal with an open heart and mind.
