It has been difficult for me to share the details of my time in Thailand, because it is hard to put into words the reality of the situation that I met with daily. I could tell you about the man who told us he took a step closer to God after meeting with us, or the lessons that God taught me though intercession this month, but there is something deeper that I would like to convey. This wasn’t a month of “feel good” ministry, it was about identifying with the brokenness of a community that has accepted prostitution as a way of life. And though my words may be few I hope you read them with soberness. I am grateful that God shared his heart of compassion with me this month. Without further ado,

An Open Letter

Dear Prostitute,

It is hard to imagine anything other than your giggling smiling face because the gift of friendship you have given to me has been priceless. You have shared with me your language, favorite foods, funny stories and fond memories from home. We have sung songs and danced together. You have declared beauty and worth over my life.

I know you have go now, and the harrowing statement has left me pained, “Someone must pay for me tonight.” I see the hurt and fear in your eyes and I know your need, your desperation, because no one truly wants to work in the bars. I also see the lies that have been spoken over you since birth.

I’m here to tell you, you are worth so much more. You are talented and brilliant. You can study in University, you can be a wife, a mother, a friend. You can reach for your biggest dreams and please don’t stop until you get there.

I know it hurts that I am leaving you but I want you to always remember that you are not forgotten, by me, but most importantly by God who is our Father. He calls you daughter, princess, beloved. The names he has given you are true, and every lie will fall to the ground in his presence. Please hold onto that truth. I will be praying for you, I love you.

Your Friend
