As my team hits the streets and begins to connect with our community here in Cambodia we would like to share with you the people that we meet. We began our ministry by doing a prayer walk in the streets surrounding our hostel. Many of us being new to the idea of a prayer walk were slightly intimidated but willing to take a step of faith. Becky had been intrigued by a tall blue house in the distance the previous day and we decided to pursue that direction.
Two by two we walked and as we turned the corner the noisy and eventful street became still. The houses stood grander than we had imagined and we saw the sign of a political party, the CPP – Cambodian People’s Party.
Further down a woman called to us and we stopped to see if she could speak English. Communicating with her was difficult, she rummaged for a pen and scribbled the number 100 on her hand. We were unsure what this number meant but thanked her and continued along. A moment later it was realized that the houses along the street were marked with numbers, maybe she was asking us to visit house number 100, we thought. Since we had plenty of time we began our search for house number 100, continuing to pray on the way.
We took note of a sign in English and observed that it was a school of sorts. The people inside the gates seemed to be leery of our arrival as we slowly approached a man came out to meet us. He invited us to come into his office. His name was Sophorsd he was the director the small school which had a dormitory housing 32 students. He graduated from the university with degrees in Khmer Literature, and Law and Economics.
Recognizing we were seated with a man of much knowledge and authority we took advantage of this opportunity to learn about Cambodia. We asked him to give us a lesson of sorts, the topics covered included Religion, Politics, and History. We also learned about him personally that he has written a novel and many poems. He is a man with much passion concerning education and has devoted his life to seeing his students succeed. He reviewed a few Khmer words with us before we left and told us his name literally translates to “good husband.”
We decided to finish our prayer walk where we had started and in completing the circle we realized that the blue house that had originally caught Becky’s eye was marked with the number 100. The fences were high and the gates locked but we simultaneously began to pray over that house. Who knows why God lead us to this particular home in the community… Who knows if the woman we met even meant for us to find this house… One thing we know in true, God heard our prayers and will continue to work in the heart of the precious people in this community.
