I would like to ponder what it means to be brave; in a world where I constantly feel the need to be accepted, in a world where I don’t want to let anyone down.
In a society that is consumed with self and the next promotion; a bigger boat, a second house, the American dream. But what if I cannot be satisfied with the American dream? What if a college degree and job security is not enough? What if I actually sought first the kingdom of God?
Brave – “ready to face and endure danger or pain; showing courage.”
Ready. This is more than a good idea.
“How many people say how they would love to do something like this, but never actually do it.”
Endure. Remain consistent, despite my feelings.
Danger/Pain. How about we just call it uncomfortable. Homesick. Lonely. Cultural and language barriers.
Showing Courage. Strength, boldness. God given grace even when I’m afraid. My bravery comes from my number one supporter, the Lord.
To be brave there must be an element of fear.
When we were children we saw that giant slide at the water park and marched to the top with confidence that we could conquer. We were brave even in the face of something terrifying.
Last summer my roommate and I had an opportunity to go to NJ pier/water park and with free wrist bands in hand we were ready to conquer ever single ride. We slicked on the sunscreen and slipped into our bathing suits. After a couple hours I realized, “well, that’s about it.” Soon after we packed our bags and headed for the car. Though I had a good day, I must say there was lack of excitement. I didn’t conquer a single ride, because they had already been conquered years prior.
The same is true in our walk with God. I believe many Christians are comfortable where they are at and to be honest I like to be comfortable too. We all do. The Spirit of God inside of us is ready for more. He is ready to inspire a new dream or vision. He is ready to give us the courage to execute that vision with excellence. And even if we fail, he is willing to pick us back up and help us to continue on.
The World Race is an uncomfortable idea for me. When I first heard of this trip my pastor asked, “Emily would you do something like that?” My response was simple, “No way!” However God usually has a different plan than we do. As months went by he began to slowly change my desires to the point where I was convinced that I MUST do this thing. I made a choice to be brave. It was a simple choice and as I walk in obedience to God he has been faithful to supply my every need, whether it is emotional, or practical, he has never left me lacking.
I got out of the lazy river and and began the climb up the steps to the top of that terrifying water slide. I pray that you will join me and allow God to use you beyond your comfort zone to serve others and give hope to not only the nations but also your neighbors. And in the face of fear we will become conquerors.
I have opened up a Bravelet account and $10 from each item purchased will go towards my World Race fundraising goals. Check out the shop to purchase a unique reminder that you ARE brave.
