Kathmandu, Nepal is so dark. Found out today that 30,000 women are involved in human trafficking/ sex slavery in the city alone. Thamel, a part of Kathmandu that we actually stayed in for a few days, is one of the leading places in the world that women are kidnapped. Specifically tourists. (Sorry MOM & DAD, at least I’m okay though!!)
Our ministry contact told us that their Nepali ancestors made covenants with the devil. Hindus COVER the nation. And so do demons. So do evil spirits.
One day we were walking in Thamel-Kathmandu and my squadmate Roberto was asked in broad daylight if he was interested in sex and told him they could arrange it. Not okay.
Ran into a glue kid on the street in the same area. He pretty much attacked Ruth begging for money and food. He had some crazy skin problems and his fingers were so deformed. Phil told me later that same day he sat the kid down and talked to him. The kid and his friend were about 13 and 15. They had been doing glue for 7 years. That explains the deformities. Said they didn’t want to stop using. So many have tried to help them and get them off the streets but they refuse. They love the lifestyle, they love glue. Tourists give them so much money. On average the kids make $30,000-50,000 a year by themselves. And what do they do with the money? They buy glue. They also buy paper bags and line the inside with shoe shiner and get high off of it. They live on the streets, give alot of the money to their parents because they DO have parents, the parents buy drugs and live luxuriously and the kids scam tourists into buying them food and giving them money and they either take the food and throw it on the ground or eat the food and scream at them “bitches!!” and run off.
A local I met talked about his anger towards monks in the area. He said he’s witnessed with his own eyes monks walking down the street with their robes on, walk into a hostel, come back in different clothes, and walk directly towards the prostitute corners.
This place is so corrupt. The darkest place I have been in in my entire life. But at the same time there is so much hope. The people have heard about Jesus. But the churches are so corrupt and the bonds with the devil are so strong it’s hard to see the hope. Our ministry contact is awesome though. He helps lead Nepali Youth Ministries and he is a MAN OF GOD. Same with any true believer you meet in Nepal, they have hearts of gold, they are TRUE christians. Check out the ministry website and consider supporting. They need it.
