Everyday
is different here in
the Bush of Northern Uganda. You never know what will happen or what you will
be doing. For people like myself who like schedules & a rough idea of what
to expect, it could be challenging. However I am finding it quite freeing. If I wake up in the AM
and feel led to go to the clinic, then I go. If I feel led to play with kids
all day, then I do so. I’m a fan of this. And if the staff need us to do
something specific, then they tell us.
So this
past week we did lots of different things. One day we went to the farm. Child
Voice owns a land that they farm on. The girls at the center go there to farm
too. So we went there to help clear off some land to prepare for planting. The
farm is humorous to me because we girls have to wear skirts…even to FARM!!! So
when I go to the farm (which has been twice) I make sure to wear my beautiful red sundress. This just cracks me up.
Anyways, the job gets done…in beauty
& style. J
Also
this week I worked with the Bead Project. Child Voice employs women in the
community to come in and make beads out of recycled paper. The staff teach the
women how to roll the beads properly, varnish them, & then string them. The
products are then sold online & in the USA. Let me just say I’ve rolled
beads with them & it’s not an easy task. These women can roll up to 300
beads in a day. (I can roll maybe 40 on a good day.) It’s amazing! And their
work is so beautiful! So I’ve gotten the privilege to hang out with these women
& learn how to make beads. They told
me this week that I was Acholi, which is the name of their people, because
I work so well. And then they proceeded to tell me to marry an African so I
could stay here. I laughed and told them my mom would miss me. It’s funny. But
for real, these women who roll beads are wonderful & their creations are
wonderful! Buying their products helps support Child Voice, who is then able to
employ these women!!!

If you
want to buy some of their creations, you can go to the website (www.childvoiceintl.org/store)
and order it. They have a new boutique line coming out this January so heads
up!!
P.S. This is where i live:
