So, in addition to the blog I just posted, I have found that there are a lot of random pieces of information I want to give you. However, I don’t feel like writing them into a formal blog. So, I’m just going to randomly throw them out there in this blog. Take them as you will:
- My whole squad is together this month – 43 of us living together on this property in addition to Tony and Nidia’s family. It’s crazy, but fantastic – it’s been a really good time to get to know everyone and develop friendships throughout our whole group.
- During the week, we all split into our smaller teams and head out to work with different people/organizations/ministries. This week my team stayed back on the property and helped the men who are building the girls dormitory here. We did a lot of landscaping… and let me tell you, I have never seen this many rocks in my life. There are more rocks than dirt in this place. It’s insane, but we had a fantastic time.
- Working this week has been exhausting, in a good way. Each day I’m ready to go to bed an hour earlier than the day before. Yesterday I was 100% ready for it… at 6:30 PM. We don’t usually end up passing out until 10 or so, but I have a feeling by the time I get back to America I’m going to be snoozing by 8:30 PM and up by 5 AM each day. For those of you who know me well… I’m just as surprised about this as you are.
- We have a co-ed bathroom here and it’s hilarious.
- We actually have toilets, but can’t flush the toilet paper down with everything else. You would think that would be an easy thing to remember, but… it’s not.
- Honduran sunsets are absolutely incredible. I try to watch them every day that I can.
- The weather is perfect. Most days reach about 75 degrees and are perfectly sunny. Though, it does get pretty cold at night.
- Honduran coffee is equally incredible. I drink way more coffee here than I should… but it’s just SO GOOD!
- Running through the mountains here is exhilarating. One of the dogs who lives on the property here goes with us every time (which, as you know, is one of the best things ever) and sometimes some of the younger kids try to follow… which has resulted in me carrying them home after 5 minutes of running. It’s also slightly terrifying, because nearly every house you pass has 1-3 dogs that will chase you and bark until you’re off their property… but that just makes the experience more memorable, right?
- The night sky here is amazing. The sky is so dark, the stars are so bright, and there are no city lights to interfere with it.
- Sleeping outside in my hammock under those stars is one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.
- I have already gone 7 ½ days without washing my hair. I am seriously considering getting dreads… just so I don’t have to deal with my hair overseas. Though… after those 7 ½ days I have to admit it was really nice to have clean hair.
- I, along with at least ¼ of my squad, have already gotten sick. There is this weird cold/sinus thing going around, and it’s no fun. BUT, we power through and try to work as hard as we can despite it.
- I love the people I’m here with. Each person has their own unique story, abilities, and sense of humor. It’s awesome. I’m excited to get to know them more over the next 10 ½ months.
- There is a place right next to the property we’re staying on that sells 2 tacos for a dollar. There is also a place next to that that sells packs of cookies for a quarter. I am going to get fat here.
- The exchange rate here is 1 USD for 19.2 Lempira’s. Everything is incredibly cheap.
- Driving here is definitely less organized than America, but not as crazy as other countries I’ve been to. People just decide to scoot past whenever they please which sometimes almost results in treacherous accidents.
- I need to go for a run with some people now, so… that’s it for this time!
Adios!
