Karan was not my favorite kid when we first got to Asha.
He was loud and rough and just plain too much. He had arrived there a few days before us and was not able to go to school yet. He walked with us to take the kids to school and to pick them up everyday, but he always stayed back. He always bothered us during the day and tried everything to get our undivided attention while we were trying to get other things, like laundry and cooking done. He didn’t speak or understand any English.
But a month can change so much.
Since then, he’s learned some english, simple stuff like yes and no and hello. He has calmed down so much and is a doll to be around. He ended up being one of the most loving kids this month. During this month we found out that the only reason he wasn’t at school was because they had no funding for his forms. So all you supporters out there, you helped. We were able to, as part of our budget this month, pay for Karan to enter school. The kid was ecstatic. Your heart would have broken too if you had seen his face when he found out.
So this past Monday, our last day at Asha, we walked over to the home bright and early. There was Karan in his new plaid uniform, with his new shiny black shoes and his hair all combed. He was the first one ready, with his pink and purple backpack strapped firmly to his back. “Thank you, Didi! Thank you, Bhaya!” He still doesn’t know much English, but what he does know, he can use!
I want you to know that there are differences being made in lives over here because of what you are doing. Thank you so much for choosing me to be the one you send. It means so much to bless people wherever we go, and we couldn’t do it without our supporters at home!!
