Sarah’s Covenant Homes is a ministry that shelters and cares for abandoned children with special needs. Over the last five years 115 children have found their way through one of three homes. The Victory Home is where my team is stationed this month.

Holding, playing with, and loving on children seemed like a dream when I heard what we’d be doing. The reality is that it can be overwhelming at times. From the moment we walk through the gates children just looking to be loved on swarm us. Their caretakers do their best but
the simple truth is there are just too many.

A lot of days we hit our “touching” limit after just a few hours. We have a nightly routine of de-licing each other’s hair. I now have a designated Punjabi (authentic Indian outfit) that I wear to the house everyday. It is covered in sweat, dirt, drool, and other things I don’t even want to think about.

As I sit on beds and touch and talk to children who go hours without a simple touch I remind myself that this is all worth it. As I help a child walk properly or sit up to see the world that escapes them as they’re lying flat most hours of the day I tell myself this is what God meant when He commanded us to love the least of these.

One smile,

one giggle,

one small stride of physical progress.

Those are the things that add up. They are what really matter. It may not feel like we are doing much at times but to someone else, someone often forgotten, I am learning it is a big deal.
