It always seems to surprise us how many people around us actually understand English. We try to talk to them, ttry shake their heads like we're crazy people, so we mime it out (reinforcing that we are indeed crazy), and then 20 minutes later we discover that they really do speak a little English, they were just a little embarrassed and didn't want to try. Plus, it's probably hilarious watching us try to communicate. I mean, the other day one of my teammates acted out laying an egg at the grocery store. We're funny stuff.

That being said, teaching English for a week was certainly an adventure. My teammate Matt and I taught the lower intermediate level, which meant that conversation and understanding was limited, but we could still communicate.  Again, lots of charades.

The program we worked with had it set up so all the levels taught along the same subject, all around the theme of God's promises. We got to talk with them about God's presence, forgiveness, restoration, guidance and provision. This was all leading up to the year long program that they do, around learning about God from Creator to Savior.

The people we came into contact with through these classes were amazing. Perfect strangers quickly became good friends. My afternoon class was filled with several young women that reminded me a lot of the ladies I miss working with back home, and it was a huge blessing to be around them.

What blew me away was how appreciative they all were for our time. We only saw them a few times, but very quickly relationships were formed, and it was hard to say goodbye. I feel like that's the one thing so far about the Race that I wasn't expecting. I knew about all the goodbyes that needed to be said before I would leave, and how hard those would be, but I forgot about all the goodbyes you have to say along the way. All the people you fall in love with who you just have to leave, trusting and hoping that you'll get to see them again.

But now the goodbyes have been said, and we are officially in month 3! After a wonderful and much needed week with the whole squad to debrief, we have moved on to our next location. But more on that soon. 🙂
