Sometimes God uses little things to teach us big lessons. In this case, He used things that are supposed to be little, but in reality were rather large. Yes, I am refering to spiders and rats.

A few days ago, my team had the opportunity to go with some young people from our church up to Montecito, a village up in the top of some nearby mountains. The view is incredible! Another team from our squad has been there all month, and although they are in tents and only have electricity when the generator is turned on for night time church services, the view makes it worth it. Truck, motorcycle, and horse are basically the only modes of transportation that can make it up there because of the steep and narrow roads, so all 14 of us piled in a pick up truck. Little Daiber, a 4-year-old boy, fell asleep on my lap almost as soon as the truck was moving and despite the tumultuous ride, he stayed asleep the whole time. It was such a beautiful picture of our relationship with God, I think. Daiber knew he had no control over the ups and downs or the potholes that we would certainly drive through, so he just trusted and rested in the arms of someone who cared for him. Life is unpredictable and full of potholes, and God just wants us to rest in His arms and give up control.

Because, let’s face it, we don’t have control. We can’t control what happens to us in life, nor can we even control what creatures decide they want to spend time with us.

Screams are always the cue to come see what creature has come near Katie or her stuff, and the first time it was a very large spider next to her Bible and clothes. The next day it was actually a tarantula. That’s right, folks. About 4 feet away from where my head would be that night, there was a gigantic, furry, multi-legged tarantula. Then, that night was when we went up to Montecito and as soon as we walked into the room that our host family was letting us sleep in, a huge rat ran toward Katie. We slept 3 in a bed with a mosquito net over us, but we heard scurrying both on the roof and on the floor throughout the night. For Katie, Renee, and I, it was a very long night.

God tells us to rest in Him. Sometimes that is easier said than done. Correction – it is ALWAYS easier said than done. But man, when you realize that you can’t control it anyway, it is so nice to just cuddle up with your Dad and take a nap while life takes you up and down treacherous roads. Whether life brings you tragedies, miracles, joy, heartache, or furry creatures next to your bed, remember that God asks you to lay fear and control aside and just trust Him to take you up the mountain safely.

(On the way up to Montecito… narrow roads with drop offs on both sides as well as stunning views)

Will rest in the shadow of the Almightly.”
