When my name is called out, I answer. I sign it on every receipt and at the end of every email. It is what identifies me from somebody else. In fact, when I meet somebody, the first question I ask is, “what is y0ur name?”. It makes things personal… and it ultimately means a relationship has started.
My favorite part about new relationships is when somebody remembers my name. It makes me feel important, appreciated and empowered. The same goes for the women at the IDP Camps. I love shouting their names out across the camp when they are carrying water, or being able to greet them with their name and hug them so tight. It would light them up, make them smile and most of the time make them laugh at my mispronunciation.
The truth is the majority of these ladies don’t even have I.D’s. As far as the government goes, they are lost and forgotten. They don’t make the list. Getting them I.D.’s is one of the first things the WR Kenya Initiative has decided to do upon return in May 2011.
For now, they remain with no physical I.D. to prove who they are. But the good news is that God knows who they are. They make His list. He knows them all by name. He knows what makes their heart beat a little faster. He knows what makes them smile. He knows their every need. He knows all.
So if I can be a reminder for them of these truths by just knowing their name, then I will memorize every single one. Memorize a name, make someone feel special this holiday season! Love you all!
