Everyone knows that I have an obsession with the BOLTS! But it is this deep love for the San Diego Chargers that has been teaching me a lot lately.
1. I get really upset with bandwagon fans.
2. I get really upset with the boys on the team who get in trouble.
Now what in the world does this have to do with Jesus?
Well…
1. Bandwagon Fans: These “fans” are those who like the Chargers when they win. Example Facebook status, “OMGosh PHILIP RIVERS I LOVE YOU!” And those who want to jump off a cliff and delete all their statuses saying GO Chargers when they lose. Example Facebook Status, “The Chargers stink. GO RAIDERS!”
The fact that this makes me upset, is just a tiny glimpse of how God feels when we claim His Goodness one day and then deny Him the next. Why is it that when things are going well we profess God, or even say “Thank You God” just for a little parking space? But then when things turn for the worse, it’s abandon ship? We curse and run as far as we can. Let’s not be BANDWAGON fans in life.
2. The “boys” who get in trouble with the law: Living in San Diego, it seems like the headliners for our nightly news is always about the next Charger player who is going to court for an offense. Currently there are many facing trial for various reasons. Of these players so many little kids look up to and are excited to even wear their jersey to school. Players who donate money to charities, but even more to strip clubs.
How does this upsetting me get God involved? Well outside of the NFL, we are all players in His game. The Bible says that we are “running the race,” implying that we are athletes in God’s kingdom. Yet how many of us fall short and walk instead of run? Or turn our backs again and again? Or what if our lives were constantly on watch like the Chargers? How many people would we let down who look up to us? God has placed us in a position where we can be great witnesses and good stewards of His gifts and blessings. Let’s not get in trouble with the law (God).
Although I’m upset with the bandwagon fans and the Chargers every so often, I understand that the God I serve calls me to forgive like He has forgiven me. He forgives us all of anything we have ever done and will ever do. He is a God of GRACE AND MERCY.
