Many cultures greet each other with a holy kiss. This blog is a lesson in the best way to handle these kisses.
Number 1: Embrace the fact that an elderly woman is going to kiss you. Understand that this kiss is how they tell you they appreciate you being at their church or home. It is really an honor to receive one.
Number 2: Always go to the right. These kisses typically start with a single handshake or a hug, and then you will be pulled in for the kiss. (usually on the cheek, or your neck if you move to fast) Don’t get caught in an awkward side to side motion and always move your head to the right and let them do the rest.
Number 3: Smile. Make sure they know that you appreciate the greeting. Try to keep the look of surprise off your face. Even if they have a beard. It happens. Return the favor with a hug or a kiss on the opposite cheek if you feel comfortable.
Our time in Bulgaria has been filled with kisses, and a few awkward moments to accompany them. But this month has also been filled with many blessings. The gypsy communities we have been living in have some of the most kind, hospitable people I have ever met.
Everywhere we went, every home we stepped foot in, we were blessed beyond reason. Families gave up their beds for us, and even their entire homes so that we could be comfortable. They often gave us all they had-their very best. Food never stopped coming (I have probably gained a few lbs. in conjunction with this) and we even traveled to some homes where our laundry was taken care of for us. Our happiness has been the most important thing to them and it has truly been an honor to be apart of this culture.
I will never forget these moments in my life, even the ones involving a random unexpected kiss from a sweet Bulgarian woman I have never met.
