So, you may ask–“What exactly does a
typical day look like on the World Race???”

Good question. I’m still trying to figure it out.

Let me just say first of all that there’s really
no such thing as a ‘typical day’—in fact NO two days look alike. Your job is
simply to show up and serve however needed. No questions asked. Just give it
your all.

Do you always have the skills? Nope. Do you
always get it right? Nope. Do you always want to do it? Not necessarily. I
mean, is scrubbing toilets really anybody’s favorite job?

Yesterday we worked at a center for mentally
handicapped adults, they were awesome! My favorite part was singing with them,
they have such joy and always keep you on your toes. We also helped assemble
calendars which they will sell as a fundraiser. This is another team’s ministry
site but we will be working with them one day a week as well as working at a
hospital to raise money for kids who need heart surgery. Every day on the Race
is like an episode of ‘The Apprentice’ meets ‘The Real World’ meets ‘Survivor’.
You never know what kinds of projects a day will bring. It can be kind of
exciting but you also really need to learn to give up control.

Today we had our first day of ministry at
Kawan (which means ‘Friend’ in Malay); it’s a homeless shelter we are working
at here in Penang and I’m already in love this place. They give the people free
meals, a place to shower, and to sleep. They meet people’s physical needs as
well as spiritual needs, doing it all in love with no strings attached. So
here’s what my World Race looked like today:

7:30 am: Wake up, breakfast, devotions, get ready for the
day, walk to ministry center

9:00 am: Worship and prayer time with YWAM for the nation
of Thailand (flooding)

9:30 am: Orientation, meet all kinds of new people, get a
tour of facility

10:00 am: Butter bread and pour coffee; sign in the
homeless people and greet them with refreshments

10:30 am: Bible study, sing songs in Malay, share
testimony, pray over a woman for healing in her neck

11:30 am: Prepare lunch and serve, wipe down tables, sweep
up and do dishes

1:30 pm: Team time (talk about what you’re learning,
feeling, praying, etc.)

3:00 pm: Final cleaning of the facility and debrief the
day with the ministry contacts

3:30 pm: Return home, read, relax, check emails, etc.

5:30 pm: Get clean & dressed up (by World Race
standards)

6:30 pm: Go out to dinner with team and try to order food
from a waiter who doesn’t speak English

9 pm: Come home, hang out with friends, and write a
blog

11:30 pm: Time for bed!

So, what OTHER kinds of things have I done this year on the
World Race?
