My name is Dylan Borst. I am 20 years old, and will turn 21 in February, 2016. I am currently a sophomore at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia. If you do not know where Milledgeville is that is ok, I had to look it up myself when I was looking into Georgia College. However, Honey Boo Boo is from Milledgeville so you may be more aware of Milledgeville than you think. I am studying English with a concentration in Creative Writing. My career plans after college are unsure, I guess you could call me more of an English undeclared major right now.
I was born in the western suburbs of Chicago, and lived there for two years until my family moved down to Marietta, Georgia. Most of my extended family lives in Grand Rapids Michigan, where my parents are from, and my family still makes the trek to Michigan twice a year. This has made me think of Michigan as another place that I am from, although I have never actually lived there. In my immediate family I have my two parents, Scott and Jayne Borst, and two sisters – Madi, my older sister, and Riley, my younger sister. We also have a dog Wrigley who is a 12 year old chocolate lab mix. My older sister Madi was married two years ago so I now have an older brother Matt, as well. Lastly, there is Madi and Matt’s dog daisy who I guess would be my niece.
I have always loved baseball. I am a Chicago Cubs fan, but I am also a fan of the game. I play softball at College as an intramural sport. I also really enjoy music. I am a fan of The Beatles, Paul Simon, John Mayer, Counting Crows, Jack Johnson, The Weepies, and Jars of Clay to name a few. I also play guitar in my free time, but I am still a pretty remedial guitarist. My Myers-Briggs personality test says that I am a XSFJ which means that I am half extrovert and half introvert, and I tend to be a feeler and a sensor. I think that I have been gifted spiritually as a servant. I am willing and excited to help anyone who asks or needs my help.
I was raised in a Christian home, and both my parents are Christian Reformed. I accepted Christ in middle school, and have been continually growing in Christ since. A big factor in my spiritual growth was one of my teachers in high school, Mr. Bullington, who mentored and discipled me throughout high school. Even though both my parents were Christian Reformed I never thought of myself as a reformed Christian until about my junior year of high school. This is because my parents never forced their theology on me. As I studied the Bible more for myself my theology became more reformed as well. Some of the highlights of my spiritual journey have been the mission trips I have gone on to the Dominican Republic. Going to the DR really opened my eyes to see how vast the need for Christ was not just around me back home, but also throughout the world. This was one of the factors that made me want to spread the Gospel and love of Christ throughout the world.
I struggle with anxiety and worry sometimes, but God has always been there to show me that He is in control of everything, and that I should not be anxious about anything. I hope that in the coming year that I will be able to hear and see God more clearly so that I can better be an instrument for His will.
I found out about the World Race around the end of my junior year of high school when I was considering taking a Gap year before college. I was looking into several different Gap years when I discovered the World Race. I felt a very strong pull to the World Race, however I was not old enough. I thought and prayed about it for the next three years and when I still felt a call to the World Race I decided to apply. I hope to see God glorified and at work by bringing people to Himself over my time with the World Race. I am a little worried about taking a whole year off in between my sophomore and junior year of college and what my life will be like when I come back, but I believe that this is what God is calling me to do and that everything will be fine when I come back.
Please pray that in the months leading up to my trip that God readies my heart and mind for the trip, and pray that during the trip that God’s love and glory is made known to all those our group comes in contact with, and that many come to believe in Jesus as Lord.
