Some of you may not know this, but prior to launch I have been working as the High School Youth leader for girls at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina. My day to day job includes office hours, meeting with girls, Bible studies, and learning the ins and outs of working for a church.
Tuesday morning is always occupied by a group of four girls whose Biblical knowledge surpasses mine by a landslide. Even still, they come every morning at 6:30 to Eggs Up Grill, where we are studying the book of Romans.
If you have ever read Romans, Paul loves run-on sentences and convoluted ways of stating simple truths. Sometimes it will take us the full hour just to comprehend a few verses; but usually, I can point the girls to a concise conclusion about the passage. However, this morning the Lord had other intentions.
Romans 9:29 says,
“And as Isaiah predicted,
“If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring, we would have been like Sodom
and become like Gomorrah.””
I start explaining the story of Noah and how he was the “offspring” the Lord spared before destroying Sodom and Gomorrah. All of the girls had a confused look on their face, and kindly said, “Dyer, what do Sodom and Gomorrah have to do with Noah?” I suddenly realized that I had completely switched up the story of Abraham and Sodom and Gomorrah with the account of Noah and the flood! The teacher got it wrong!
Sometimes being the leader of a Bible study produces pride and mindset that we have all the answers. We forget that the only reason we have the opportunity to lead is because the Lord has entrusted us with a position of leadership. Because of our sinful nature, we constantly need reminding that we do NOT have all the answers. Even the ones we know, we don’t even fully understand.
This morning I was reminded of that, which challenged me to go back and read the passage about Abraham, Lot, Sodom and Gomorrah. Thankfully, the Lord has placed four God-fearing, Bible-knowing girls to point me to the One who has all the answers!
