This week in class, we have been unpacking what it means to live by grace. Many times we use the term ‘grace’ very loosely and, because it is a common ‘Christian’ word, we don’t stop to think what it actually means and how it can change the way we live.

Grace is getting what you don’t deserve.

We did a word study on grace for class this week, going through more than 50 verses in the New Testament where the word is used. We jotted down what they meant to us, and here were a few of the responses:

– Grace began before time; we didn’t do anything to deserve it. – 2 Timothy 1:9

-Do everything with grace in your heart – Colossians 3:16

-Speak to people with grace – Colossians 4:6

-Our life should be affected and changed by grace – 1 Corinthians 15:10

-Grace never runs out for us – 1 Timothy 1:12-14

-God can demonstrate grace perfectly in my weaknesses; I am sufficient in Christ! – 2 Corinthians 12:9

-God overpaid for us when He sent Jesus to the cross; He gave more than enough to cover the sins of the world. He is a God of abundance and extravagance! – Romans 5:15

Wow. Pretty amazing stuff, huh? As you look up some of these verses, it becomes apparent what God has to say about grace: We didn’t earn it, our lives should reflect it, and He gives it in abundance.

Now, because God has given us grace, it doesn’t mean we live however we want, but it comes with a huge responsibility. A responsibility to live a life that reflects Christ in us. We have a responsibility to be men and women of integrity, good character, and strong convictions. If we say we are people of grace, we need to be gracious to others when we speak, we need to be people who are quick to forgive and be the first to say ‘I’m sorry.’ In other words, we need to grow up and be people that God can look at and say, “that’s my son, and I’m so proud of him.”

So a challenge for all of us is to accept God’s grace, say ‘thank you’, give it freely to others, and be examples of Christ in who we are and in all that we do. Let’s be people of grace!  We love you guys!!
