Dit is het dan… de laatste blog.
Op het einde van de 11 maanden lukte me het al niet meer zo goed om veel te schrijven. Een gebrek aan tijd, of geen internet, … Er was altijd wel iets. Maar ik heb genoten.. Amai. Na al de drukte in Azië was de Afrikaanse rust enorm welkom. De mensen zo open en vriendelijk, alles draait er om relaties. Ik werkte met kinderen in Swaziland en Zuid-Afrika en hielp waar ik kon met tuinieren in Botswana. Op mijn pagina zal ik ook het filmpje toevoegen dat mijn race samenvat.
Ondertussen ben ik alweer anderhalve week thuis. Het lijkt alsof ik nooit ben weggeweest en toch heeft ook hier de tijd niet stilgestaan. Ik heb niet het gevoel dat ik een grote re-entry shock heb meegemaakt. Toch is het soms even slikken. Bijvoorbeeld deze morgen als ik schoenen zocht voor onder een kleedje, en dan zie hoeveel keus ik heb. Na 11 maanden met maar 3 paar schoenen was het overweldigend.
Ik heb ook niet het gevoel dat ik boos ben op onze cultuur. Ja, we hebben duizend keer meer dan dorpjes in zo wat alle landen dat ik ben geweest. Maar de armoede was niet zo een probleem.. Hopeloosheid raakte me veel dieper. Mensen die geen uitweg zien. Mensen die het leven hebben opgegeven. Dat raakt me. Kinderen zonder keuze, vast in de situatie waarin ze geboren zijn.
Maar nu.. de grote vraag. Wat nu na de race? Na een weekje is het beslist. Ik vertrek terug. Op 2 januari ga ik opnieuw voor een jaar weg. Dit keer naar Durban, Zuid-Afrika en blijf ik op één plaats voor het hele jaar. Ik zal er vrijwillig werken voor Trulife, een organisatie vanuit de kerk. Met een groep enthousiaste medewerkers gaan we naar scholen om er shows op te voeren. Shows met theater, dans, video’s enz. De verschillende thema’s zijn pesten, identiteit, sex, human trafficking, … Aangezien ik 10 jaar drama heb gestudeerd aan de academie in Genk, heb ik er veel zin in. Tussen de shows door hoop ik terug naar het weeshuis te gaan waar ik afgelopen maand heb gewerkt.
Dus opnieuw een hele uitdaging…

This is it… The last blog.
At the end of the 11 months, it became difficult to still update my blog. Either time or internet was the problem, or something else… But I enjoyed it! After all the busyness in Asia, the African rest was very welcome. The people are so open and friendly. A culture based on relationships. I worked with kids in Swaziland and South Africa and helped with farming and so much more in Botswana. I will add a video to this page which sums up my whole race.
In the mean time, I have been home for about a week and a half. It seems like I never left, but time did not stand still here either. I don’t feel like I went through a big re-entry shock. But sometimes I have to catch my breath. For example this morning, I was looking for shoes to wear underneath my dress, and then I saw all my options. After 11 months with only three pairs of shoes, it was overwhelming.
I’m also not mad at the culture here. Yes, we have a thousand times more than pretty much every village I visited in another country. But the poorness wasn’t really the problem. The hopelessness hurted me way more. People who can’t see a way out of their situation. People who gave up on life. That hurted. Kids without choice, stuck in the situation they grew up in.
But now… the big question. What after the race? After a week home, I had to decide. And I will leave again. On January 2nd I will leave for Durban, South Africa for a year. I will stay in one location for the whole year. I will work voluntary for Trulife, an organization from the church. With a group of enthusiastic collegues I will go into school to perform productions. Productions with drama, dance, media, ect. De different themes are bullying, identity, sex, human trafficking, … Since I studied drama for 10 years at the academy in Genk, I’m really looking forward to this. In between shows I hope to go back to the children’s village I volunteered at last month.
So a whole new challenge/adventure is awaiting me.
