To explain a little first… in Africa, door to door evangelism is welcome. It’s a great blessing in their eyes to have visitors, especially white people! So revert your thinking away from what we would think of if a stranger knocked at our door asking to come in. What’s great about Rwandan door to door evangelism is that it’s based on building a personal relationship with the person regardless of their decision to accept Jesus or not.
One day, my team, along with our contact, Moses, was doing door to door evangelism around the community. We met a lady who lived with her two sons and her husband, whose name is Innocent. Her children are both very young. One had some form of mental illness.
This lady invited us in to sit down in her living room, which consisted of a very small bench that was off balance and a small coffee table. She told us that she is a Christ follower, but her husband was not. She told us of how he drank a lot and how they had little money for anything. We talked for a while, prayed for her, and told her that we would bring her a bible within a few days. On our walk home, our contact Moses told us that he sees Innocent around town all the time drinking very heavily.
A few days later when we came back to deliver a bible to her, Innocent was also there. We preached the gospel to him and told him that he doesn’t have to be perfect in order to come before God, but God is the one who makes us perfect. I also shared a bit of my testimony that I felt would relate to him. After our conversation with him and answering his questions, he decided to accept Jesus into his life.
About a week later, we ran into this man again on the street and he was definitely changed! His demeanor had changed… he held his head high and had a huge smile on his face. The Lord’s joy was so evident in him! He said he hadn’t drank at all since accepting Jesus the week before. Since then his name Innocent has never had a more relevant meaning. When we allow God to come into our hearts, we are given a new innocence. It doesn’t matter what we have done, what we are doing, or what we will do because our fate was settled a long time ago on the cross.
This is only a small story and is very simple, but it paints a good picture of our lives here. We are building relationships and using our stories to touch others. The Holy Spirit leads us to the right people at the right time and helps us with our words. It is not us who saves the people. We are simply a team that is willing to be lead by the Spirit. Fortunately for us , we get to tell stories like this because of your support. This story is just as much mine as it is yours… those of you who are also following the Spirit by praying for us and supporting us.
If you feel led to continue to support or to do so for the first time, please keep us in your prayers as we are about half way through this journey. Pray for renewed strength and for the Spirit to continue to guide us. Also, if you feel led to give financially, please click on the “support me” link to do so. Any amount helps!
Thank you so much!!!
