One day we met a sweet couple from Germany who have been living in Thailand for 35 years and they took us two hours away, through the mountains to a hill tribe that they’d been working with for years. They have been busy learning the language and are currently developing a written form using Thai characters so that others can learn to speak that dialect. But most of all, so that they can put the Bible into the people’s heart language. Its amazing what they are doing. Its pioneering at its truest form. It was inspiring to see how they have dedicated their life to this specific people group.

This same couple invited us to their house for dinner a few nights later. They made us a home cooked meal of spaghetti, garlic bread, and salad. There was even lemonade and ice! We felt so spoiled and blessed. It was wonderful and I can’t even explain to you how homey it all felt. We were laughing about the fact that Americans and a Canadian were in Thailand eating Italian prepared by Germans. It was quite the international meal.

For dessert they brought out cookies and it was met by all six of us saying “oooooh!!!” But that wasn’t all. They brought out real coffee. REAL coffee. Not instant. We were still soaking this all in when they brought out dishes of ice cream for each of us with three different flavours. We couldn’t believe it and were beyond speechless, or so we thought… they weren’t through yet.

It was Lauren’s birthday the very next day and they remembered, so after dinner they brought out a little birthday bag for her and started singing. She covered her face and the waterworks started. After a few moments all of us were crying and wiping our eyes with our napkins. We were so overwhelmed and couldn’t believe they were doing this. This couple had become pseudo parents to us and treated us as their own. We could barely handle it.

They didn’t want to leave the rest of us out either so we each got to unwrap a present and inside was a small, beautiful handheld fan. We had been talking about how we had wanted to get some the other day because its so hot out here. They picked up on the smallest things that we had said and blessed us with it!

That evening will always stand out to me as one where Jesus showed us how much he loved us. We were actually completely bowled over by his love through this sweet, sweet German couple. It was completely overwhelming. Words cannot even describe it.

Being away from home for so long and away from family is tough sometimes. You miss having a home. But this couple made one for us here in Thailand, of all places. We will be forever grateful and never ever forget it. That evening will stand out as on of the best moments on the race. I got to see Jesus in a tangible new way and he used them to show me what love to “the least of these” really looks like and that is a highlight of the race for sure.

Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?” The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”   ~ Matthew 25:37-40
