On July 24th we woke up at
4:30M to leave our ministry site and head to Ahero in order to visit
the ministry of a teammate’s family. First we needed to drive to
Kitale to catch our bus to Kisumu. When we arrived in Kitale a swarm
of African men surrounding our car, trying to grab our bags and
“help” us so that they could get money or steal it, we’re not
really sure. After a few minutes we get on the bumpy African bus and
head to Kisumu. As we pulled in the bus station we were swarmed with
people yelling “Mzungu” (which means white person in Africa) and
trying to get us to buy their food, use their bus, follow them to
their house, get our money and all sorts of ridiculous things. One
man walked up to Joe and was like “give me all your money I’m a
robber” then he just stood there and laughed!! It was very special.
So Joe told the guy that we had no money but he would pray for him;
no joke as SOON as he prayed for the man all the vendors left us
alone. The bus company we wanted to go with didn’t have enough room
for all of us to get on the bus because there were already passengers
on there. However, this was no problem for the van owner, he simply
kicked off the Africans and gave us the van to our selves. When we
arrived in Ahero we were very excited.
The ministry that Bekah’s family has
there is amazing!! A local man named Bernard came up with the program
and they have a school for orphans!! The children at the school are
soo loved; the staff are absolutely amazing and Bernard has the
largest heart! Growing up he walked about 2 hours, I believe, to go
to school in order to get his education and his desire is to make it
easier for as many children as he possibly can.
While we stayed with him we got to
spend a day at his school playing games (mostly soccer and rugby),
singing songs, and teaching them Bible stories.
