It’s amazing to me that we have been in San Salvador, El Salvador for nearly two weeks and I haven’t actually written a blog about it! Ministry and life in San Salvador look so much different than any other place that we have been. Some of our ministries have been in depth and I have separate blogs I want to write about them, but overall I would say that we are serving in a supportive role this month.
During the week we live in San Salvador with Jacki & Oscar! The church that they attend is in San Vincento, about 40 minutes from San Salvador. At this church, Jacki’s dad is the pastor and Oscar is the youth pastor. Recently, Jacki’s dad was in a car accident and is recovering from injuries and surgeries. During this time, Oscar is in charge of leading the church. On the weekends we travel with Oscar & Jacki to San Vincento to stay at the church/her parents house. In San Vincento we, along with another team that is here, take turns planning the youth service; in order to lessen Oscar’s load. Then on Sundays we attend the general service, usually, and we go back to San Salvador on Sunday night.
While we have been in San Salvador we have attended a kindergarten school to present a bible study. We hang out with the youth from this massive mega church (The Little Baptist Tabernacle: Friends of Israel). Not only to we hang out with them, but we have joined them in their ministry with the homeless people. Three times a week they bring bread (or some other type of food) and hot drinks (coffee, hot chocolate) to the people who live in the streets at night. They also have a program for men recovering from addictions that we have been able to visit twice.
Unfortunately, this seems to be the month of mis-communication. We had a full week planned last week and half of it was canceled or rescheduled; usually an hour before we were supposed to leave. We are supposed to help paint a children’s home in the up coming week; we shall see if that happens.
In the mean time, we have all been learning a lot about ourselves, spending a lot of time with God, and enjoying the El Salvadorian town which is nick named “little america”. Oh yes, and eating lots of pupusas 🙂 Look it up, they are yummy!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pupusa
We will be here until the 25th or so, then we will have debrief in Guatamala. THEN we fly to LAX for a lay over and off to Thailand!!!!
