I’m sure you all would love an update from the Philippines, but well, this isn’t really it. It is an awesome God story, though.
Last March (2014), while in El Salvador serving with YWAM, my team was doing a listening prayer exercise. We were supposed to pray for God to show us someone that needed prayer. Then, we were going to walk to the mall and try to find that person and pray for them.
I prayed and saw a dark-haired man in an orange-colored t-shirt. I told my prayer partner this. “What did the shirt say?” he asked.
“It had letters on it… A&F, like A & Fitch? What’s that store? Abercrombie?”
Since I hadn’t seen anyone wear an Abercrombie & Fitch t-shirt since high school, I was a bit skeptical. But I knew this was the person God wanted me to pray for.
We went to the mall and searched. We checked every floor, every store, and every courtyard. Twice. With each step I became more and more discouraged. I could not find the man in the orange A&F t-shirt. I sat down with my partner and told him my worries and frustrations. Maybe I heard God wrong. Maybe I made it up in my head. Why couldn’t I find him?
“Maybe you are not supposed to find him today. One day, when you least expect it, God could reveal him to you. Or maybe you will never meet him. But that does not mean that he does not need you to pray for him.”
That day, I started praying for the man in the orange A & Fitch t-shirt. I looked for him all over the world. When I think about him, I pray for him and his family. I trusted that even if I NEVER meet him, God wanted me to pray for him for a specific reason. So for the last year and a half (almost), I have prayed.
Now it is July 2015, and I am co-leading a team of 10 high school girls at Valenzuela Christian School in the Philippines. A few days ago, when talking to one of the girls about listening prayer, I remembered the man in the orange t-shirt and told her about him. She had a similarly-somewhat-discouraging story of a woman that she saw in a vision but never found.
I shared with her the orange-shirt man, thinking perhaps God had allowed me the experience to speak wisdom into her.
The next afternoon our team was going out to celebrate the 4th of July. Our host came to pick us up. When he walked up to the van, I hit the girl in the leg. “LOOK!” I said, though I could barely get that out.
This is the shirt my host was wearing.
For over a year, I have been praying for my host, Ed, and his family. I did not know we would be working together or that I would have to travel across the world to find him. But I have been praying. I was able to share this story with him and his wife, and we all had tears in our eyes because our God is so amazing. And what an encouragement for him, to know that God has had someone praying for him this whole time, that God loves them enough to have a complete stranger pray for them for over a year.
God NEVER ceases to amaze me.
I still need to raise $3,000 for my annual salary to work with Adventures in Missions. If you would like to be a part of my work in helping high schoolers minister to the nations, please follow the steps below! And THANK YOU for your prayers and support!
