It’s in the winds that blow over the mountains; it’s in the rumbles of thunder as they pass us over in the night; it’s in the voices of the Haitians as they lift their song to heaven.

A cry, a longing, a plea for restoration and empowerment.

Our squad has heard the cry in Haiti. We’ve seen the longing and sought out a solution to the plea. We’ve discovered that the greatest long term solution to the needs of Haiti is neither instant nor extravagant. Instead, it is to gift them with the power of education.

This month, J Squad has been serving at Mission of Hope (MOH) in Haiti. We are doing work projects and village visits, and during this time the Lord has revealed how much his hand of blessing is upon the work of MOH.

MOH has three main pillars: indigenous mobilization, church advancement, and education advancement. The majority of their mission is operated by local Haitians who are able to have a lasting positive affect on the nation. Each of the eleven villages that MOH partners with has a Village Champion whose main job is to care for the people in his or her village and spread the gospel. MOH also employs pastors and teachers who help the villagers grow in their understanding of Jesus Christ. Currently, MOH serves 97,000 hot meals a day, and 7,000 children are attending a MOH sponsored school.

Although there are 7,000 students receiving an education through MOH, only about 3,500 have sponsors. It only costs $35 each month to sponsor a child and give them hope for a brighter future. Sponsorship covers 90% of the overall cost and is used to fund each child’s tuition and a hot lunch every day. In order for the child to attend school, the family must invest in his or her education by paying the extra 10%, which covers school administrative costs.

At MOH, the students learn “Mwen Kapab ak Bondye,” which means, “I can with God.” We as a squad believe in this truth and it would mean so much to us if you could sponsor a child and teach them that they too can do anything with God in their life. Over the next week we will be writing a series of blogs that illustrate just how much this program means to us, and on Friday, September 26, we invite you to join in the “I Can Project” by becoming a sponsor.
