Lord, I want You to be the first object of my affection. So if anything is getting in the way, if I love anything more than You, please take it away.
What a scary prayer!
Idols can sneak up on us so easily. We find something we like, grow to love it, and if we're not very careful, we can put it before God.
In my life I have put friends before God, work/school, sinful desires, even singing while praising the Lord. I have worried when I should have prayed, tried to fix my problems when I should have asked the Lord, and sought advice when I should have looked in the Bible.
And I'm tired of it. Because when God is number 1, there's no need to worry-the Lord has everything in control. There's no need to sin-God takes away our sinful heart and gives us a new one. There's no need to impress other people-the Lord is pleased with you. Don't be thinking this is written for anyone 'better' than you. Right here, right now, God loves you – even likes you – and craves that number 1 spot in your life.
Let's let Him show us what gets in the way, so He can knock down what really has the number 1 spot in our hearts.
"Lord, take away the things I love if I love them more than you."
