Although the Filipino people live in a third world country,
they are the most hospitable people I’ve ever met. They are so willing and open
with everything which makes you feel like you’re party of the family. When
you’re walking down the street all the people give a little eyebrow lift and a
“Hey Joe” that makes you feel like a celebrity. I was actually thinking about
charging ten cents a gander. The roads here are lined with little family owned
businesses of all sorts; some that were thrown up this morning and some that
have been there for years. It’s kind of like a giant flea market. (I also heard
that they sell live cobras at the market!)
The construction has been hard, but nothing that I couldn’t
handle. A lot of the team is getting their first real calluses and there are
lots of sore backs in the morning. It has been fun to watch the projects get
done. Oh what I would do for a Case 465 right now. I’ve heard from a worker
that when they’re not working they bet on spiders that they fight. Like roosters,
which they fight as well. I think I found my new career choice. They don’t need
college for that.
Our team has been doing very well. We have not run into any
major snags…yet. I have decided we’re the team of dorks, and we are loving it.
Our team times in prayer and conversation have been great. You would be
surprised at how many dumb games you can come up with while carrying buckets of
dirt. What I would do for a wheelbarrow. We’re all starting to get accustomed
to the way we smell and we’re getting good at wearing the same clothes.
God has blessed me with the desire to listen to Him and I’m
getting better at it. My quiet times have been filled with surprises and
reminders that have brought me closer to Him. God has kept me healthy, even
though I lost my voice on Tuesday, but that was just to help my team out for a
night.
Keep up the good work in prayer for all of us. I love you
guys!
