This past week, some of my squad mates and I were given free reign on the topic of teaching sex education at the local public high school. Let me tell you right now, not necessarily a topic I thought I’d help teach when I signed up for the World Race! But we were up to the challenge and know that God can work in all circumstances.

My teammates had started a week prior and with the Lord’s leading, they came up with a structure. They told me that they were actually teaching more on love with an emphases sexual healing/purity and decided not teach the stereotypical “use a condom” and the “you’ll get aids or HIV!”. We started by introducing ourselves and giving a little fact about us. Next, we shared a video of a spoken word about sexual healing and on how you don’t just have sex with a body, you have sex with a soul. After that, my teammate Dylan shared his testimony of abuse and how he was redeemed and shown what real love is. He asked the students what they thought what love is. We hardly ever got much of a response. So Dylan would read 1 Corinthians 13. As he read it he would replace the falsehood of the love that the world said with the truth of God’s Word. (Check out Dylan’s youtube channel for a vlog on this. Click here.)

Next, we had the students bow their heads and my friend Davante would say, “No matter what you’ve done know that God loves you. And He wants to tell you. Would you like to hear what He thinks of you? First, there are 4 truths about who you are that God tells us in the Bible.

1. You are deeply loved
2. You are a son or a daughter of the Most High King
3. You are chosen
4. You have been forgiven so you can forgive others

“Secondly, God likes to talk to us. Who in hear has ever heard God speak to you?” Very few or none would raise their hands. “Would you like to? You don’t need to be a Christian to hear God speak. Just ask Him,’What do you like about me? What makes me special?’ ”

After several minutes, we asked them to get up and write on the chalkboard what they thought God was telling them. I was in awe of what God spoke to them.

“Beloved.”
“I’ll catch you if you fall.”
“Come with me.”
“Hurt no more my child for you are loved.”
“You have been forgiven. Open up your heart and let me in.”

Those were just a few of the incredible things said! Often, these teens who have never read the Bible would come and write straight scripture without knowing it! After everyone had the chance to write on the board and after a few tears we prayed with those who wanted prayer for forgiveness and salvation. It was amazing to be able to show them right in front of their eyes that God speaks. We had so many students tell us that this class changed their lives forever and that they are choosing the love of God. The work done in that classroom gave me a new perspective on the fact that God does work through any circumstance and He will speak if you give Him the chance. Another school in the area heard on what we were doing and how the students were being changed and we are now serving the Lord there too!

I’ve been so blessed to just be a part of what God has done here in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.
