Team Change served with The Father’s House Church in Heideveld, located outside of Cape Town in South Africa. We partnered with the church to support services, as well as local outreach and ministry opportunities. Being located in Cape Town allowed us to explore a lot of the beauty within South Africa and connect with incredible people!

Thank you, everyone, for your continued support, care, prayers, and positivity!

TWR 10.1: exploring cape town
~ ~ ~
team change was assigned to work with the father’s house church in heideveld, a town just outside of cape town. after we settled into our new placement following a long travel journey from zambia, we were anxious to explore south africa’s well-known coastal city!

TWR 10.2: partnering with the father’s house church in cape town
~ ~ ~
working with the father’s house church, team change supported the community within heideveld in a variety ways. one of my favorite assignments was being able to be involved with the incredible worship services on sundays.

on this particular sunday, i had the opportunity to fulfill a dream i only dared to imagine for the past 16 years! on my 16th birthday, my dad gave me a guitar [thanks, dad!] and my hope was to learn how to play so that i could one day play worship in a church. of course, my lack of musical talent and absolute terror of public appearance prolonged my progress and made it difficult to achieve that goal. ;0) with a little prompt for the HOLY SPiRiT and a LOT of encouragement from my team, i finally found myself in front of a church community…over a decade and a half after i received a guitar…in south africa! GOD sure is sneaky and creative in the way and timing in which HE leads us to our victories!

additionally, my teammates contributed to enriching the service. vicky and jo led in music, coffey delivered a wonderful [and comical!] message, and salvador shared a powerful personal testimony and also performed one of his original rap pieces. i am blessed to be surrounded by so many gifted squadmates!

TWR 10.3: checkin’ out cape town’s waterfront
~ ~ ~
cape town is a vibrant, colorful, artsy city, filled with so much adventure and opportunities to explore. one of our adventure days brought us, by way of the back of a pickup truck, to the water front for shopping at the mall, feasting at the V & A food market, and further connecting with the city and people!

also joining us, a special guest – our raise-up squad leader, vicky, who served with us for a part of this month.

TWR 10.4: the father’s house kids’ club
~ ~ ~
the youth in heideveld had a week of holiday from school, so, as an outreach opportunity, the father’s house hosted a “kids’ club”. team change designed the publicity, spent a day out in the community to promote the program, and facilitated the event featuring community-building, music, games, bible stories, scripture, and a light lunch, among other activities.

PS – if you find yourself working with the tinies, try out hillsongCTYouth’s version of “the monkey”. it just might be the most intense, wild, hysterical, exhausting thing you’ll ever do. ;0)

TWR 10.5: turning 32 with the flu
~ ~ ~
well, i spent my birthday [october 10] in bed most of the day, under the weather. though i was battling an upper-respiratory inflection, my teammates cared for me and loved me well and my entire squad still celebrated me in person with gifts, gestures, cards, and feasting; through packages and letters, and by emails and phone calls!

…as i learned this birthday, one’s immune system weakens by age 32, but the love surrounding an individual only strengthens. ;0)

TWR 10.6: robben island
~ ~ ~
i so value the opportunities that the world race can present for individuals to be exposed to the significant past contexts and stories that have shaped countries across the world. during one of our adventure days, we were able to visit robben island, be guided and educated by a former political prisoner [sparks], and explore the biography of nelson mandela and south africa’s history with the apartheid.

TWR 10.7: climbing table mountain
~ ~ ~
one of my favorite adventures of my entire journey with the world race was a day dedicated to hiking to the top of cape town’s beautiful table mountain. exploring the stunning nature and breathtaking views of south africa with an incredible friend and squadmate was certainly an unforgettable experience!

TWR 10.8: cape town church tour
~ ~ ~
we had the opportunity to explore a variety of churches within the cape town area, so we dedicated one weekend to joining multiple worship services spanning a variety of styles and communities in CHRiST.

our visits included the father’s house church, planetshakers church, and hillsong church at the century city campus.

TWR 10.9: speaking at the father’s house church
~ ~ ~
public speaking is not my favorite; it’s not my gift, nor my calling. in fact, it terrifies me. so, of course, as i began to pray courage and boldness over myself, GOD immediately responded in presenting all sorts of opportunities to put that pray into practice.

throughout our month serving with the father’s house, each one of my teammates were able to share and encourage the church with their testimonies. on this particular sunday, it was my turn.

10.10: travel day brings a new friend and hillsong church visit
~ ~ ~
a very long 18-hour bus ride from cape town to johannesburg brought a surprise opportunity to make a new friend and share the love of JESUS through unexpected conversations and a spontaneous visit to another hillsong church!

a great reminder that the call to love others must be woven into every day, ever moment!
