There are many ways of looking at the same thing. Each way that you look at a situation, an object, art, people, culture, or religion in a new light, you can gain new knowledge and it can potentially influence the way that you saw it before. Same ‘thing’, new perspective.
The World Race has helped me to change my perspective on a lot of things such as the way I think, the way I view the world, myself, others, church, Christianity, and many more. I didn’t notice my views changing until recently when I heard a TED talk about perspective. How we view things really does change our outlook, attitudes, and reactions to different situations.
I realized this the other day when I went for a jog. I’m not a runner, but I felt the need to exercise, so I decided to go out. When I was jogging, I was looking down at my feet. The terrain is very rugged and since I have weak ankles, I was watching my step to make sure that I didn’t fall and roll it. My jog seemed like it was going on forever. I was running around a field near the house and it never seemed to end. At one point in my jog, I looked up to see how far I had to go, and it wasn’t that far. When I began to look up and see where I was going instead of focusing on my feet, I felt a lot better, it didn’t seem as bad. I had a view of the bigger picture, things seemedto be going by so much faster, even though I was going the same speed. Changing my point of view made my run easier and more enjoyable, all because I looked up.
If we changed the way that we look at different circumstances we may feel differently about it.
Now lets change it up.
Lets say that there is a program that has changed MILLIONS of lives in the United States. Well, I would say that is a very effective project. However, if we take that same program to Kenya, is it going to have the same results?
nope.
People in Kenya are different than the people in America. They have a different view, a different way of life, different culture, different opportunities, different language… I can go on. These differences change perspective. Just because something worked for you, doesn’t mean that it will work for everyone.
If we want to make a difference in a community, a country, a home, or in someones life, we have to be able to see a bigger picture. We have to look at the culture, the way that people think. There isn’t one way to do things. The most effective tactic in America doesn’t apply to the entire world. If we want to be effective, we can’t be afraid to look at it differently, do it differently, be different.
I’m learning that God’s way is the only way. Just because the Lord teaches me about patience one way, doesn’t mean He will teach you about patience in the same way. The Lord is so good and knows all of us so well. He know what will teach you the best and it is different than the way he teaches Bobby-Joe down the street. Jesus knows us SO WELL. He makes changes due to the different perspective we have and the different people we are. There is more than one way to look at Danae Cosgrove, and the Lord knows every side… how cool is that. If anyone knew what is best for me, it is the Lord. So my challenge is this; look at things in a different light. Don’t look at everything the way it has always been looked at. If you want to make a change, look at the different aspects of the situation and create a new, unique way to bring the change. Hint: Ask the Lord, he knows the best way… ALWAYS!
Thanks for reading some thoughts from my brain. I hope that you can all gain a new perspective by looking at life in a different way. But no matter how you look at God, he is always the same… He just has so many different facets, there is always something new to learn!
