Have you ever played hide & seek with a small child?  Do it some time.  A lot can be learned from this little engagement.  For starters, they tend to hide right in the open, cover their eyes and assume they can’t be seen.  If they can’t see you, you can’t see them, right?  As they get older, they may wise up and hide behind a tree.  It takes awhile before they learn the tree should be bigger than they are though.  In the end though, it’s always somewhat of a relief to be found.  I mean, nobody wants to be that kid everyone forgot about.  You just don’t want to be the first one found.  Oh the good ol’ days of hide & seek.

But are they over?  Doesn’t God play hide & seek with us every day?  Oh wait, that’s right, we play hide & seek with Him every day.  If God was the one told to hide, He’d be that little kid giggling the whole time while standing out in the open field.  God wants to be found.  He’s absolutely terrible at hide & seek.  I mean, TERRIBLE.  Like, worse than any little kid you’ve seen!  Now that’s bad…

In fact, if God was told to hide, He’d probably be the kid coming and finding you!  The one you have to keep explaining the rules to because “you just don’t seem to get it.”  GOD WANTS TO BE FOUND.  But here’s the cool part, there’s no need to find Him-He’s not hiding!

I heard this quote one time that I feel sums this up pretty well.  It says,
People say they find God.  That’s funny, I didn’t know you could lose Him.

God’s like that dry peanut butter than won’t seem to get off the roof of your mouth.  He’s always with us!

In Deuteronomy 31: 6, it says,
“the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Think about that a minute.  God is never going to leave us.  Ever.  I mean, if you have to, think about that as a threat.  Think about that as Him watching you.  Have it be scary, creepy, whatever–I don’t care.  Whatever way you need to for it to get through!  God’s not going to leave; he’s not going to hide.  He’s always with you!

When it comes to this game of hide & seek with God, oftentimes God is the one calling us out of hiding.  Why are we hiding though?  Surely He didn’t tell us to, like in this silly childhood game.  Perhaps it’s shame for something in our past, something we feel God could never forgive us for.  Maybe it’s guilt for something we should have done, something we let tear at our heart every day.  Or maybe it’s just fear; fear of the unknown, something far greater that we can even imagine.  Whatever it is, there’s something there that we’re hiding from.  Maybe we need to ponder that a bit.  Not until then will we realize there’s no need to hide, God’s already there, waiting for us.  There’s no need to find Him; no need to look far or wide.  The Lord, our God, has His arms open wide, ready to call us His own.

So I pray for all of you, may you have the courage to come out of hiding.  Run to your Father.  Let Him find you.  Let Him love you.  Let yourself be His.  End this game of hide & seek once and for all.  I promise, you won’t regret it.
