“I can change the world with my own two hands/ Make a better place with my own two hands/ Make a kinder place with my own two hands/ With my own, with my own two hands/ I can make peace on earth with my own two hands/ I can clean up the earth with my own two hands/ With my own two hands, I can reach out to you/ With my own two hands/ With my own, with my own two hands/ I’m gonna make it a brighter place/ I’m gonna make it a safer place/ I’m gonna help the human race/ With my own, with my own two hands/ I can hold you with my own two hands/ I can comfort you with my own two hands/ But you got to use, use your own two hands/ Use your own, use your own two hands/ With our own, with our own two hands/ With my own, with my own two hands”

With My Own Two Hands- Ben Harper

I often forget that these hands I have, the ones I’m typing with right now, are among the greatest gifts I’ve ever received from God.  These same hands I feed myself with or play games with, have been given to me by my heavenly Father not merely for my use but to serve my fellow brothers and sisters.  These very hands can be hands of healing, hands of comfort, hands of provision, hands of service, hands of praise, hands of commitment.  Their strength can be used as tools or their soft touch can be used to wipe away tears.  What a versatile gift the Lord has given us!  It’s not enough though that the Lord just gave us these hands, He trusted us with these hands.  When God created me, He took time and created me with splendor.  He created every inch of me, especially my hands, with such care because He knew what could come about from them.  That same care, that same love, that God used to create me was used to create each and every one of you!  How amazing is it that even our hands were created with such love and precision?!  I don’t know about you but that just still blows my mind every time I think about it.

The first time I ever really reflected on my hands was while on a mission trip in West Virginia.  It wasn’t until I was there, free from the distractions of my every day life, that I was able to start really focusing on the important things in life and start seeing the blessings in my life for what they really are-gifts from up above!  Before that week, I took for granted the fact that I could feed myself or that I tied my own shoes.  I took for granted everything I did with my hands.  I mean, sure I wasn’t always selfish with my hands-I did service work, I prayed the rosary, I was a Eucharistic minister.  What I’ve realized though is that’s not enough.  It’s not enough to do the actions if you never stop to realize why you’re doing them…down to the hands you’re doing them with.  I would not be able to pray the rosary, be a Eucharistic minister, or do service work if God did not trust me enough to bless me with these two hands.  I need to continue to remind myself of the blessing that they are and I pray that you may take some time to reflect upon your own hands and realize that you, too, have the power to change the world with your own two hands.

Loving God,

Thank you for the gift of these hands.  Whether bruised or broken,
scratched or smooth, these hands are not my own
-they are yours.  Thank
you for trusting me enough to give them to me.
  I pray that you may
give me the strength, the courage, the perseverance, and the faith to
change the world with my own two hands.
Help me to unite these hands
with those around me to always remember the power they posses because
they have been given to me by you.
