I see you there. So happy, adored by both of your parents. Regardless of your parents beliefs (most likely Hindu or Buddhist), they and their religion cherish you. You are beautiful. You have a wonderful spirit about you. You have such high hopes for yourself and you are so confident. You get to play with your friends, show them affection and are encouraged to do or become whatever you want to be when you grow up.
But as you get older, things might change. I hope they don’t, but for so many just like you they have. I see them too. They look beaten, let down, lesser citizens. They often work in the fields, or sometimes on the streets, places that, here, are considered to be of lesser value to society. They aren’t likely to make much money. They likely take care of multiple children at home, serve their husband and children first, and still find time for themselves. When they have guests, although such a joy, they will serve everyone else first and often go on unthanked and sometimes seemingly unnoticed.
As a young adult, I hope you have to opportunity to see new places. I also hope, that in your adventures, the men don’t cat call you as you walk down the street, though they likely will. I pray you don’t fear walking down the street at night or get angry that they look you like your a piece of meat. It is my hope that you walk with your head held high even if they are shouting inappropriate things, trying to get your attention, scam you out of money or pick pocket or rob you because you look weak.
Little Sri Lankan Girl… I pray you know your worth.
I pray you never lose sight of what you want to be when you grow up.
I pray you know that you are meant to be loved.
I pray you you know you are made in the image of God and are something to be loved and cherished … always.
I pray you learn the difference between submission to man and being a second class citizen.
I pray you walk with the confidence you had as a child.
I pray you reach for your dreams.
I pray you see yourself as God sees you: fearfully and wonderfully made… a miracle in God’s eyes, meant for his purpose and to bring his kingdom.
Love,
Dacey
